Dance teacher Sivasankar was born on December 07, 1948 in Govindappa Nayakkan Street, Chennai to Kalyana Sundaram and Komalam Ammal. His father was a wholesaler at the Kothawal booth. He suffered a spinal fracture at a young age due to an accident. For that he was cared for by his aunts until he was 8 years old.He was educated at the Chaukarpettai Brahmanical Council Hindu High School. She grew up without contact with the outside world as she was mostly cared for by women in the family. He recently mentioned that this is the reason for his feminine behavior. His father was a gifted scholar of Carnatic music and astrology.

When his father attended the Carnatic music festival, Sivasankara was asked to represent him in drama and dance festivals. This encouraged her to learn dance. He learned the basics of dance from Natraj and Shakuntala in Mylapore. Later, he joined in 1974 as an assistant to choreographer Saleem.

Sivasankar Poove, who has acted in more than 800 films, has won the Tamil Nadu Government Film Awards for Best Choreographer for films like Unakka (1996), Vishwathulasi (2003), Varalaru (2006) and Uliyin Osai (2008). S. S. Sivasankar won the National Film Award for Best Dance for his performance in Rajamouli's historical drama Magadheera (2008).

In 2003, the fast-paced dance to the song "Manmatha Rasa" from the movie Thiruda Thirudi was widely talked about. In 2003, she was awarded an honorary doctorate for her services to dance at the New International Christian University in Bangalore.Sivashankar has acted in movies. Especially Q. S. He acted as Ajith Kumar's choreographer in Ravi Kumar's History (2006).

He played the role of a Christian missionary in Bala's historical drama Paradesi (2013), in which he converted innocent tea plantation workers. He has worked in more than 10 languages, though primarily in South Indian films, Tamil and Telugu.
